In this census, there were 87,504 different governments identified by the Census Bureau. There are five basic types of governments that are taken into consideration by the Census Bureau.
One of the first governments listed as contributing to the government census records, is that of 'county governments'. These governments exist in nearly all states in this country, with the exception of Rhode Island, Connecticut, and in the District of Columbia. Other inclusions are the parishes of Louisiana, and the boroughs of Alaska, which are added among the counties of all the other states. The number of these 'county governments' that were detected in the census was 3,043.
Next on our list of government census records contributors are 'Municipal governments'. Counting in at around 19,372, they are set in place to provide government services of a general nature for specific populations that are concentrated and held within defined areas.
In this list of governments, along with the boroughs, counties, and parishes of the county governments, they include cities, villages, and towns. For the purposes of the Census Bureau city-county governments are treated as municipal governments.
Township governments show up next in line for contributing to government census records. There was a total of 16,629 that were reported, and they were created to provide governmental services to areas without any regard for population quantities. They are found spread out over eleven different states, as well as including six New England state towns, with Minnesota, New York, and Wisconsin all adding to the mix. The last two types of governments that contribute to the government census records are the 'special district governments' and the 'school district governments'. There were around 34,683 of the special district governments that were counted in the census, while a smaller number of 13,726 was the number for school district governments. These school governments were put into place to provide services like public elementary school, secondary school, and higher education services, utilizing sufficient administrative and fiscal autonomy for them to qualify as independent governments. If a school is dependent upon a municipal, a township, or a county or state government, then it is excluded from this independent status. The 'special district' governments act as independent governments as well, and are treated as such by the Census Bureau when taking their census.
