Us government social security death records

Posted by AF under government records

US Government social security death records are kept in a database known as the Social Security Death Index. The index includes many of the people who were filed as being deceased from 1962 to the present. Since 1973, most of the people that were filed as being deceased with the Social Security administration were between the ages 65 to 75 years old. The last time the record was updated was January 28th of 2009. Since its update the office calculated over 83 million people were on the registry.

The Social Security Death Index also known as SSDI can be found anywhere online. Most times sites that deal with genealogy will give the information on the deceased away for free. Many people have been able to locate their ancestors through this index; the index contains a vast amount of pertinent information that families would need to know in order to properly build their family tree. You can receive information such as, the person's date of birth, date of death, their social security number, and the last place of residence.

After you have found your relatives information through a genealogy site such as ancestry.com, building your family tree should be incredibly easy. You can follow the pertinent steps to get in contact with your local social security office, and request an application for the deceased social security card. Once you fill out the application and return the information, you will be given an SS-5. This form can be used to find out vital information about the deceased. You will be able to find out the birth place of your ancestor, as well as their fathers name and even the maiden name of their mother. This information will make your search in genealogy ten times easier.

Many people fear that with the US Government social security death records, being available for public view that identity theft would be on the rise. People believe with the information being public, it gives people the motive to steal the numbers and use them to destroy a dead person's name. Well, according to the Freedom of Information Act, the information must be made public. And, instead of thief's being able to easily manipulate the system and steal the deceased identities it actually prevents fraud instead of escalating it.

The index is no where fool proof at the present time. There have been instances reported where people have been listed incorrectly as being deceased and they were still alive. To date there are around 23,000 people who are listed as being deceased that are in all actuality very much alive. With the mix-up it causes people who are alive to deal with immense struggles proving they are who they say. Also, because of the mix-up it makes the people who are alive and well subject to identity theft, because their numbers can easily be found through any online registry.
